Hear the mixed reviews from our elected officials.

As Governor Schwarzenegger released his May budget revision, many State Senators and Assemblyman immediately issued statements that shared their thoughts on it.

Below are the statements issued by our local representatives Senator George Runner, Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, and Lancaster Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, all Republicans.  

Sen. George Runner:

“My biggest concern with this budget is that it has California spending more money than it will take in. If we are to truly rid this state of debt, our first objective should be to get spending under control."

“That’s why it is important for the Legislature and Governor to come together and steer the state on the road to fiscal recovery. The successes of future generations of families, business pioneers and community leaders depend on our actions today." 

“I remain hopeful that in the coming weeks we will work diligently with Gov. Schwarzenegger to craft a responsible, balanced budget for the people of California.”

Assemblyman Cameron Smyth:

“It is pleasing to see that the Governor has not proposed any new taxes and is using money to pay down the recovery bonds early.”

“However, now more than ever, we must show great fiscal responsibility in crafting our state’s budget. With the housing market on the decline, we have great uncertainty in our future and cannot rely on windfall revenues to bail us out of unforeseen financial problems.”

“I have great faith in the Governor and look forward to working with him and my Democratic colleagues to achieve a balanced budget.”

Assemblywoman Sharon Runner:

“Although revenues have been better than expected, we must employ extreme caution in crafting our budget priorities. I am pleased that the budget protects the interests of Californians by funding public safety programs including Jessica’s Law, an issue that has always been my top priority.”

“Most importantly, this budget does not raise taxes on hard-working California families, an issue that Republicans have stood firm on.”
