Local Schools Do Well In State Testing

Highs and lows not always tied to socioeconomic status.

Academic Performance Index scores were released today by the California Department of Education and most of the local schools met or exceeded state expectations.

The highest scores in the area came from Stevenson Ranch Elementary School in the Newhall District, which achieved a score of 944, more than 140 points over the 800 point standard.

The lowest scores were found in the Sulphur Springs district, at Mint Canyon Community and Canyon Springs Community, which scored 736 and 739 respectively. Demographic information provided with test scores note that of the 529 students tested at Canyon Springs, 311 are classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. At Mint Canyon, of a student testing pool of 268, 167 are similarly classified.

Conversely, in the Newhall district, at J. Michael McGrath School, where 298 students of a tested population of 369 were deemed disadvantaged, state officials noted a significant improvement in their scores, which went from 759 in 2006 to 783 in 2007.

In the William S. Hart District, four of the six local junior high schools were over 800, with Sierra Vista scoring 773 and La Mesa scoring 770. Of the local high schools, only one traditional high school scored high, with West Ranch High School with a score of 811. The low score went toHart High School in Newhall, which scored 705. In the small school classification, Academy of the Canyons students scored 846.
