Local Theatre Aims To Cheer Up The Unemployed

Canyon Theatre Guild offers free shows for those who have lost their job

As of June 2009, the current rate of unemployment in California hit a historic high at 11.6% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In an attempt to support families suffering from unemployment, the Canyon Theatre Guild is offering free tickets to their productions.

“We know that times are hard for many people, and we just want to help,” explained Canyon Theatre Guild Executive Director, TimBen Boydston. “Sometimes, people need to escape from the harsh reality of today’s economic conditions and theatre can provide that escape.”

The upcoming season consists of various comedies as well as musicals.

“Our free theatre offer will expose entire families to the magic of live theatre,” stated Patti Finley, Canyon Theatre Guild assistant director.

In order to obtain the free tickets, unemployed persons can contact the Canyon Theatre Guild box office with proof of unemployment.

The free tickets will be accepted at both the Old Town Newhall Playhouse as well as Regional Theatre productions at the Performing Arts Center.
