Local Valencia Resident Selected as Senate Fellow

Senator George Runner (R- Antelope Valley) has selected Julius Chen, a local Valencia resident, to work in his Capitol office on legislative issues this year. Julius Chen is one of the 18 Senate Fellows selected from 450 applicants.  Julius Chen, a William S. Hart High School alumnus, recently graduated from Princeton University. “We are excited to have Julius work in our office during his Senate Fellowship.  Its great to have Julius work in the Capitol office, who also grew up in Santa Clarita area, and knows the issues that are important to the community,” said Senator Runner. After attending William S. Hart High School, Julius attended Princeton University and graduated magna cum laude in May 2005.  While at Princeton, Julius was the co-captain of the Cycling Team, Political Chair of the Princeton University Asian American Student Association, among many other outstanding achievements. Chen said, “Having worked in Santa Clarita, the Antelope Valley, and San Bernardino County, I believe I have a good understanding of the issues that are important to Senator Runner’s constituency. I’m honored by the opportunity to return the favor to the communities, neighbors, families, and friends that gave so much to me over many years.” Julius plans to attend law school after he completes the Senate Fellowship.  He has already been accepted to several prestigious law schools including Boalt Hall (Berkeley), Georgetown, and University of Virginia with a Dean’s Scholarship.The California Senate Fellowship was established in 1973 to provide participants with insight into the legislative process. Fellows are assigned to Senator and committee offices and work as part of the public policy staff team in the Capitol. Responsibilities include helping develop legislative proposals, researching and analyzing bills, responding to constituent inquiries, and writing press releases and speeches.  The deadline to send in applications for next year is February 22, 2006.  The Web site to obtain an application is
