Ure was born in Pasadena, California, to Dick and Janean Spencer of San Marino, California. As the fifth of nine children, Darcy grew up in a nurturing home with a loving mother and father who dedicated their lives to their family.

She notes that her own mother is her greatest example: “I think I was blessed with a real live angel to be my mother.”

Her mother’s motto was “It’s easy enough to be happy when life goes along with a song. But the one who’s worthwhile is the one who can smile when everything goes dead wrong.”

Growing up, Darcy enjoyed both sports and musical theater. She attended study abroad in Jerusalem and received a BS degree in Early Childhood Education from Brigham Young University. She student taught kindergarten and second grade and always loved teaching children. She married Nathan Paul Ure in 1997 and they moved to Stevenson Ranch in 1999 where they have raised their six children, 4 girls and two boys, ranging in age from 13 to 1 year.

She volunteers in her children’s schools in the classroom and office and on committees for graduation, spirit days and school carnivals. In her church she has volunteered as a teacher of adults and children, administrator over teen-age girls, children’s music director, activity chair, Mother Education Coordinator/ Teacher, and has helped with fellowship. She enjoys interior design, photography, fitness and documenting the activities of her family.

Darcy finds her greatest fulfillment, however, in taking care of her family as a full-time mother. Her daughter Claire, 11 months old, has battled many health issues, recently having open heart surgery to repair 3 heart defects. Last year, Ure nursed and rehabilitated her 10-year old daughter, Maren, who had to be in a body cast and wheelchair after two surgeries to correct a broken hip.

Her husband notes she has helped solve complex health riddles that have protected these two children from unnecessary complications. He also adds that, “Providing a nurturing happy environment for 8 people can’t be easy, but she takes on the challenge with zeal. Nutritious meals, a clean, yet creative environment are just the start.”

Ure would like to be a champion of motherhood. “I feel there is a false notion that you have to be perfect to be a good mother and that is simply untrue. Our children don’t come with instruction manuals and we all make mistakes.”

She looks forward to teaching, encouraging and empowering mothers to realize the magnitude of their role.

Also being honored on April 14 will be Beverly Price Nelson, Rancho Cucamonga, 2012 California Mother of the Year, Margaret Ferguson Finlay, Duarte, 2012 California Mother of Achievement, Sonja Eddings Brown, Northridge, Outstanding Service to Families, and Sara Vance, Carlsbad, Outstanding Service to Children.

Nelson and Ure will represent California at the annual American Mothers, Inc., National Convention to be held May 3-6, 2012, at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., where a national Mother and Young Mother of the Year will be chosen.

American Mothers, Inc., (americanmothers.org) is an interfaith, non-political, nonprofit organization for women and men who identify with their purpose of strengthening the moral and spiritual foundations of the family. For over 75 years, AMI has strived to reach, teach and honor mothers across the nation.
