The oath of office was administered by State Controller Betty Yee. Runner represents the new First Equalization District, which covers inland California from San Bernardino County to the Oregon border.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to continue serving as an elected advocate for the taxpayers of California,” said Runner. Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club Has George Runner As Speaker“People need to know they have someone on their side when they’re dealing with California’s tax agencies.”

Elected in November 2010 and re-elected in 2014, Runner was instrumental in ending the practice of collecting security deposits from new business owners, resulting in tens of millions of dollars being returned to businesses across the state.

He also led a successful effort to reform an ineffective tax collection program targeting small businesses. He has also been an outspoken critic of the confusing and controversial California Fire Prevention Fee.

“I believe problems are solved best for taxpayers when they are solved closest to the taxpayers,” added Runner. “I will continue to work to improve California’s tax policies and practices and to create and retain more private sector jobs.”

Prior to his election to the Board, Runner served 12 years in the State Legislature. As a constitutional officer, he is currently the highest-ranking elected Republican state official in California.
