The original call to police stated Burrous may have overdosed, but detectives are still waiting for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office report for the cause of death.

During the call, a person at the hotel said they found him passed out and was possibly not breathing, according to officials.

Upon arrival, authorities performed CPR on Burrous, but he was still unresponsive. He was then taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to officials.

“Whenever somebody who is in the spotlight dies from a drug overdose, or from a mental health-related issue, it raises awareness and puts a spotlight on the issue,” said Bob Sharits, program director for the Way Out Recovery SCV. “Famous people have drug problems the same as anybody else does, because addiction does not discriminate. It has no boundaries.”

Burrous was a news anchor at KTLA, where he reported weekend and morning news from 2011 to 2018.

He previously attended Chapman University, where he graduated with a degree in journalism.

Prior to joining KTLA, Burrous was an anchor and reporter for stations in Northern California and South Dakota, and became a morning news anchor at KGET in Bakersfield in 1999.

Later, he became an anchor and reporter for KGPE in Fresno, KMAX in Sacramento and KTLA’s sister station WPIX in New York City.

His “Burrous’ Bites” weekend segments for the station were a fan favorite as he put a spotlight on the best “hole-in-the-wall” places to eat in Southern California.

“My condolences go out to his family and to other families because family members also suffer from being left behind,” said Sharits.

Burrous is survived by his wife of 15 years, Mai Do-Burrous, and their 9-year-old daughter, Isabella.
