On March 13, 2018, the Board will consider a motion from Supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Mark Ridley-Thomas that would analyze the legal obstacles and implications of strengthening gun laws in the county.

“Gun violence destroys lives, families and communities,” reads the joint motion. “Youth have spoken up in Florida and here at home. Thoughts and prayers are not enough and Los Angeles County must do better.”

If approved, the motion would instruct the County’s legal team to provide a confidential legal analysis of regulatory options available to the county within 60 days, according to officials.

The motion lists four specific actions that would be considered in the counsel’s analysis, including the imposition of additional restrictions on the sale or possession of firearms by minors or individual under the age of 21, the strengthening of safe storage requirements, and a ban on .50 caliber handguns, county officials said.

In addition, the motion would also instruct county officials to report back to the Board in 30 days with an overview of currently pending state gun control legislation, including any recommendations for support by the County of proposed legislation that would enhance the county’s efforts to protect its residents and further strengthen gun control regulations, according to county officials.

The motion would also instruct the Department of Health to propose the infrastructure needed within the County in order to create and support a Countywide Violence Prevention Initiative, officials stated.

Recently, California was ranked as having the strongest gun laws in the country. The state received an “A” grade in the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence’s annual gun law scorecard, which grades and ranks each state on the strength of its gun laws.

California was the only state in the country to receive the high grade. The state’s rank is due to its continued emphasis on background checks, prohibiting access to guns by hate crime offenders and funding urban gun violence reduction programs, according to officials.

  1. This is very sad. Did we already forget the Boston Marathon? Certainly we forgot the Alphabet Bomber, both caused terrible devastation without guns. Many lives were taken in droves before guns even existed, we have the toughest gun laws already, will we ban wires and batteries next? The problem is evil not tools. Those who pray, please pray for our state and nation while God will still hear.

  2. And what is to prevent me from buying my .50 caliber gun in Ventura or San Bernardino counties?

What a wast of county resources.

  3. I believe that the real reason for more gun laws is to give the government more ways to fine otherwise law abiding citizens for breaking obscure, antiquated,or just nonsensical laws so that the government can grow more and invade the privacy of individual lives. Simply put: follow the money.
The situation in Florida would have never happened if the jerks in government would have listened to the citizens reporting (see something say something) and to their own government run school administrators who knew what an evil person the murderer is. Their own system had multiple failures. Will anyone be prosecuted for that or at a minimum lose their job and benefits? NO, Because they are all in it for themselves with no accountability.

  4. I agree with Mark on this. Laws only apply to law-abiding citizens. More gun control laws only saddle the rest of us with more rules, leaving those with evil intent to continue to shoot up schools. The fix for this problem would be metal detectors, like in airports, and a (responsible) armed guard on each campus. Other than these measures, anyone who wants to hurt others with a firearm will find a way. More rules aren’t the answer.

  5. So Mark decides to shoplift at the mall, and I have to give up my credit cards??? I DON”T THINK SO………! SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED…..! LEARN IT!

  6. Gun Control doesn’t work. I want people control.
Find the shooters before they start shooting.
Please don’t pass more laws that do more harm than good.

  7. Guns are the problem. So are the amosexuals that love them. More guns is not a solution.
And military type automatic killing machines have no place in society whatsoever. The terrorist organization know as the NRA has assumed far too much power by frightening otherwise decent people.

  8. Mark, I totally agree. The school, Sheriff and FBI could have prevented this. How many warnings do you need before you do something. Denny, I am an NRA member. So are many of my friends, who are mechanics, construction workers, business owners, and professionals. We are NOT terrorists. We are your neighbors and are the ones that will come to your aid when you need it.

  9. The Santa Clarita March For Our Lives will be held on Saturday March 24th. at Marketplace Park 23811 Newhall Ranch Road beginning at 10:00 AM. I urge everybody concerned about the ongoing national slaughter taking place across the nation will attend and demand action to insure our rights as stated in the US Declaration of Independence- “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” We are the only major country that has this problem, thanks to the murderous weapons lobby- the NRA!
