The contract for the two firefighting aircraft from Quebec, Canada was set to expire on Nov. 30, but was extended until Dec. 15.

The L.A. County Fire Department has not requested the Super Scooper contract extension as of Thursday afternoon, said Tony Bell, spokesperson for Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

“The fire department has to first request the extension from the county,” said Bell. “If requested, the Board of Supervisors will try to allocate funds to meet the request.”

The contract extension for the planes may happen during the Dec. 12 meeting, but the action can be taken at “any time,” according to Bell.

In the past, Super Scoopers would be released after there is “measurable rainfall,” according to fire officials.

In a letter to the Board of Supervisors, written by Fire Chief Daryl Osby, the Santa Clarita Valley had not had significant rainfall and live fuel moistures were at “critical levels,” as of Nov. 30.

LA County Super Scooper Contract To Expire Next Week Unless Extended

  1. WHY doesn’t LA County have their own aerial firefighting fleet? For 10% of the money spent on benefits/support/education for “illegals” the county could buy a whole fleet of Super Tanker 747s, DC-10s, SuperScooper Helos, etc. The fact that we have to lease fire fighting equipment is illogical, stupid, and maybe “legally” criminal negligence since people die because of it.
