Over 1,400 Individuals To Be Buried At L.A. County Mass Grave

While many are reminded of how fortunate they are to be surrounded by loved ones for the holiday season, hundreds are not as lucky, a Los Angeles County official said Tuesday.

Los Angeles County officials are set to bury the remains of 1,489 individuals Wednesday in a mass grave — bodies that remain unclaimed with the Los Angeles County coroner after more than three years.

The bodies are cremated and the ashes are buried in a mass grave identified by a simple plaque.

The plaque states the year in which the group of people passed, and for Wednesday’s ceremony, all of the decedents died in 2011.

Officials with the Coroner’s Office work to identify the bodies and to contact family members, officials said. Veterans are separated and given a military funeral.

These are individuals who, for one reason or another, have no one but the county to provide them with a respectful and dignified burial, said Andrew Veis, spokesman for county supervisor Don Knabe.

Some are homeless. Many are poor. Some have no families to grieve for them.

“If families cannot afford the remains, the county holds onto them for three years,” Veis said. Regardless of what their status in life was, each one of them mattered, according to a county news release.

Knabe requested a moment of silence in honor of these individuals at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

It is to give a dignified and honorable funeral to the ones who passed and the families who cannot afford to pay for the remains said Veis.

The Los Angeles Crematory has a mass grave burial every year. The crematory has been burying the remains of the unclaimed since the late 1800s.

The service is open to the public and starts Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the L.A. County Crematory.

The crematory is located at 3301 East 1st Street (corner of 1st and Lorena, adjacent to Evergreen Cemetery).
