The rooster ordinance motion was proposed during a weekly Board of Supervisors meeting in December, less than a year after the largest cockfighting ring bust in US history was uncovered in Val Verde.

“The purpose of the motion is to improve quality of life for residents, reduce complaints of noise and odor, and reduce illegal cockfighting,” according to a Department of Animal Care and Control news release.

In early May of 2017, Los Angeles County Sheriff officials along with the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control recovered more than 7,000 roosters from an illegal cockfighting ring, in Val Verde, which was the largest cockfighting bust in US history.

Dead birds were also found on the property with injuries consistent with cockfighting. Officials also found “slasher” weapons, strapped to the rooster’s claws during fights, on the location.

Both hens and roosters were found on the property, but none of the birds would be put up for adoption.

Due to the aggression of the fighting birds, officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control said, they would all be put down.

“There is no sanctuary for fighting birds,” said Don Barre, a spokesperson for the organization. “This is because they are very aggressive and cannot be housed with any other chickens. Even the hens would attack other hens. These are not pets.”

The Department of Animal Care and Control is set to host a community meeting on March 1 in Acton from 6-8 p.m., where residents can come voice their concerns and ask questions regarding the ordinance, according to officials.

The public meeting is scheduled to be held at the Acton-Agua Dulce Public Library located at, 33792 Crown Valley Road.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
