Los Angeles Prepares for Autopocalypse

405 closureLos Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavksy recently referred to the July 15 to 18 shutdown of the 405 as “Car-mageddon,” and urged LA residents to avoid driving during that weekend if possible.

The closure is part of the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project and will allow construction crews to safely demolish one side of the Mulholland Drive bridge. The closure will last from 7 p.m. on Friday, July 15 until 5 a.m. the following Monday. Although Sepulveda Boulevard will remain open for that weekend, the city of LA has encouraged motorists to avoid the area, which is expected to resemble a parking lot more than a roadway.

The Getty Center museum and the Skirball Cultural Center will both be closed from July 15 to 17 as a result of the freeway’s closure that would make entry to these locations very difficult.

Concern has been raised over the effects the decision to close down the 405 will have on Los Angeles hospitals and their ability to care for their patients. However, LAPD officials have said the shutdown should not be a major problem and believe the hospitals will be able to run smoothly despite the closure of a major freeway.

The Los Angeles International Airport as released a traffic advisory for the weekend to help travelers deal with the expected congestion. According to their website, the airport has advised people to plan ahead for the weekend of the 405 closure by taking public transportation, with an emphasis on railway transportation. They suggest to those who must drive to avoid areas that are likely to be affected, and to make as little trips as possible.

Metro and Metrolink will be offering increased service for the weekend of July 16 and 17 to help people cope with the heavy congestion.

Metro will be providing free rides and additional bus service on the Metro Orange Line as well as free rides on the Metro Red/Purple Line subway.

Metrolink will be offering a $10 weekend pass allowing passengers to ride any Metrolink train between Friday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday night at 11:59 p.m. The company will also make seven round trips available on its Ventura County Line along with nine additional trips on its Antelope Valley Line to ease congestion within Los Angeles.

Some are using the weekend to promote their local business and provide deals to those who will be stuck in LA alongside their gasoline-powered paper weights. Car-maggedon.com a site that, according to its “who we are page,” was created by “some of the top PR, social media, and creative artists in the Los Angeles area,” is aimed at helping Angelenos make it through the weekend of mayhem that is expected to ensue from the partial bridge demolition.

The website lists events and deals throughout LA posted by local businesses that are offering alternatives to being driven off the deep-end by LA traffic. Bars and restaurants are among the business offering traffic themed entertainment, with Harvelle’s in Santa Monica offering $5 Irish Car Bombs and Cadillac Margaritas, O’Brien’s on Wilshire Blvd. selling $3 dollar domestic bottled beers, and SOUTH in Santa Monica giving out $3 Gridlock Shots, Road Ragers, and Bud STOP Lights.

Yaroslavsky, in addition to providing the viral nickname of “Car-mageddon” to the weekend, has also published a list of “53 ways to survive without the 405” that includes suggestions for those who cannot make it out of town. His tips range from number two on the list, compiling a 60’s playlist in commemoration of the year the Mulholland Bridge was completed, to number 34, tear out your lawn and replace it with native plants.

The imminent closure of the 405 has caused quite an uproar throughout LA as residents hope to make it through what is likely to be a frustrating weekend with their sanity intact.
