National Event Brings Millions of Volunteers Together on October 27, 2007
For the seventh consecutive year, the City of Santa Clarita in partnership with the Santa Clarita Valley Resource Center will join communities across the nation for Make a Difference Day on Saturday, October 27, 2007 day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
To celebrate the City’s annual “Make a Difference Day,” City staff will spend the day removing graffiti underneath a bridge in Valencia located near the intersection of McBean Parkway and Newhall Ranch Road, adjacent to Valencia Heritage Park.
“Although any day and every day is a good day to volunteer, Make a Difference Day allows local residents, businesses, schools, youth and service groups to join millions of volunteers across America in donating time and talents to better their community,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean.
Make a Difference Day is a national day of helping others. Several City-wide community service projects will be undertaken simultaneously at local nonprofit, community service organizations throughout the day.
This year, over 800 Santa Clarita Valley residents are expected to participate in more than 38 community projects on Make a Difference Day. Business groups, religious organizations, school clubs, families and individuals are invited to participate as sponsors and volunteers. In this way, nonprofit organizations throughout the valley benefit from the coordinated efforts of local volunteers.
Volunteers of all ages are invited to and pull back their shirt sleeves in an effort to help others in the community. Volunteers are assigned to projects based on age and skill level.
In 2006, 22 volunteer projects took place benefiting organizations, such as the Gibbon Conservation Center, Carousel Ranch, Bridgeport Elementary School, Boys & Girls Club of SCV, New Leash on Life, A-TEAM, and many more!
Make a Difference Day is the largest community service effort in the nation, rallying corporations, government leaders, charitable organizations and everyday Americans into action on one day. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine and Points of Light Foundation, the annual event takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.
Since 2000, the City of Santa Clarita has proudly assisted the Volunteer Resource Center of SCV with Make a Difference Day. The City also provides opportunities for residents to volunteer in the community year-round.
Make a Difference Day will begin a breakfast kick-off rally at the Westfield Valencia Town Center at 8 a.m., located between T.G.I. Friday’s and Sisley Italian Kitchen. Volunteers are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the rally.
