Dr. Dena Maloney, vice president of College of the Canyons, is one of three finalists for the position of superintendent-president of Taft College, according to multiple news sources in Bakersfield and Taft.

Maloney has been in charge of COC’s Canyon Country campus since it opened and has been a dynamic participant in the Santa Clarita business community as the college’s vice president of economic development. She has chaired the education committee of the SCV Chamber of Commerce for the past three years and has served on the COC Foundation board since 2005.

The top position at Taft College – like COC, a two-year community college – opened when Superintendent Willy Duncan left after 14 years to run the Sierra Community College District near Sacramento. The West Kern Community College District appointed Richard “Dick” Giese, a retired superintendent from another district, to replace him on a temporary basis while a committee of staff, faculty, classified personnel and community members searched for a new, permanent leader.

Maloney holds a doctorate of education from the University of La Verne and a master’s in government from Georgetown University. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Loyola Marymount.

Her two competitors for the position in Taft are Kenneth Meier, vice president of student learning for the College of Marin, and Curtis “Curt” Guaglianone, a special assistant to the provost at California State University, Bakersfield.

The West Kern County college board is scheduled to interview the finalists Feb. 3
