Just after 11:00 p.m. Sunday night, a man was struck during an accident on the I-5 freeway near Magic Mountain Parkway.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 40 year-old Manual Martinez was standing in front of his vehicle on the right shoulder of the northbound I-5. His SUV had become disabled with a flat tire.
Witnesses then reported seeing a Toyota pick up truck, driven by 36 year-old Mario Rodriguez, veer out of one of the right lanes and collide with Martinez’ SUV. The accident pushed the SUV into Martinez, who was unable to avoid the impact. The SUV then continued down an embankment trapping Martinez underneath.
Martinez, a LaMont resident, was treated at the scene. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead just before midnight.
Rodriguez was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial hospital with major injuries. He is a resident of Van Nuys.
No arrests have been made in the case, and the cause of the collision is still under investigation.
