Mayor and City Manager Check In

MayorMcLean-SantaClaritaIn Mayor Marsha McLean’s message, she notes that the forthcoming Santa Clarita Public Library will include partnerships with two library networks. Also, e-books will be available at no charge to patrons:

As we enter the second month of 2011, so much is happening in our City that benefits our residents and our business community. I am also pleased to let you know that plans for our new Santa Clarita Public Library system are moving along well. In 2011, we will be spending a great deal of time preparing for the new system which becomes a reality on July 1, 2011. As part of the new Santa Clarita Public Library system, the City recently forged a partnership with the Inland Library Network that will provide Santa Clarita residents with easy, online access to over one million titles which adds about 90,000 more titles than is currently provided. This partnership will allow the City to easily integrate its catalog with the Inland Library Network to provide a seamless process for

Santa Clarita library users to search both online and in the libraries, as well as borrow materials free of charge. The City library system will implement daily delivery of materials to facilitate quick provision of books and other library materials. Santa Clarita will also be a member of the Southern California Library Cooperative, an association of 46 independent city and special district public libraries located in Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties that have agreed to collaborate to provide library service to the residents of all participating jurisdictions. Participation in this cooperative would allow patrons of the Santa Clarita Public Library system to access interlibrary loan collections totaling 29 million items of library materials.

For those who enjoy reading books on electronic devices, E-books will be available at no charge for those who use a Sony Reader, Nook, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. (Library E-Books cannot be downloaded to a Kindle because Kindle does not permit downloads from sites other than Amazon.) There will be several hundred titles on E-books available through the City’s new library system, with more being added all the time.

I am looking forward to July 2011, when citizens will enjoy our new City of Santa Clarita Public Library system. If you would like additional information, or would like to check out the construction progress of our new 30,000 square foot Old Town Newhall Library, log onto our website at:

kenpulskampIn his message, City Manager Ken Pulskamp pegs the Old Town Newhall library’s completion for mid-2012, details the aesthetic improvements on Creekside Drive and discusses last year’s drop in crime:

It’s already the second month of 2011 and I am pleased to provide you with updates on some of the work your City is well underway with this year.

In Old Town Newhall, the City’s new 30,000 square foot Old Town Newhall library is under construction at the corner of Lyons and Main Street. The new and larger library will be a welcome addition to our Old Town when it opens mid-2012. The library will be state-of-the-art with dozens of public use computers, a children’s library, teen room, fireplace reading room and incorporation of local history into the design and décor. To watch the construction, log on to our “library cam”.

Auto row is currently getting a makeover! New sidewalks, landscape, hardscape, crosswalks and signage are underway to help modernize Creekside Drive, making it more pedestrian-friendly and safer for everyone. The work will be done shortly so be sure to check out the new and improved Creekside Drive.

We recently released crime statistics for 2010 and I’m pleased to let you know that we saw a dramatic decline in crime last year; a tradition we hope to continue. In 2010, the City of Santa Clarita saw a substantial dip in its Part I or serious crimes over the previous year in the categories of homicide, assault, robbery, burglary, larceny, grand theft auto, and arson. Santa Clarita’s crime rate was down 13.3% in 2010 for what the FBI categorizes as Part I, or serious felony crimes. We saw a dramatic 75% decrease in homicides and a 50% decrease in arson. Violent crime was down 12.2%. Burglary dropped 18.6% and grand theft auto dropped 25.7%. The City’s full year overall Part I crime rate fell to 179 per every 10,000 population, a number not seen in 23 years of incorporation.

Believe it or not, it’s actually Cowboy Festival time here in Santa Clarita! The City’s 18th annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival will once again welcome western musicians, entertainers, poets and handcrafters at Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio, in the heart of Santa Clarita. The 2011 line-up is one of the best, featuring top rated poets and musicians. Tickets are on sale now at or by calling 661-286-4021.

I want to thank you for your interest and participation in our community. If you would like to receive regular updates on topics of interest to you and your family, check out our eNotify system. For more information contact the City’s Webmaster at (661) 286-4070.
