Mayor Bob Kellar signs the City’s contribution check before handing it over to the Santa Clarita Senior Center.

Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Bob Kellar stopped by the Santa Clarita Senior Center’s board meeting to say hi…and to drop off a check for $375,000.

For many years the City of Santa Clarita has been considered a significant source of funding for the Center, with the City providing $300,000 last year.

This year, in light of increased need, the City upped their annual contribution to $325,000. But even that wasn’t enough.

“As we continue to grow, so does the need for support,” Mayor Kellar said. He added; “From a City Hall perspective, we care about our seniors.”

Due to massive growth in the need for their Home Delivered Meals, this year was poised to be the first time the Center ran out of funding for that popular program. The program delivers daily meals to many seniors in Santa Clarita, especially those that are shut-ins. Sometimes, that provides the only human interaction they see.

So after a request by the Senior Center, the City added an extra $50,000 to their contribution this year.

The money will help prevent having to put our seniors on waiting lists for the program, and will help continue the service many have already come to rely on.
