McAmis’ Arraignment Continued, Ekelund Memorial Set

christopher-mcamisThe arraignment of Christopher McAmis, accused of killing Lynsie Ekelund in 2001 and burying her body on the grounds at LARC Ranch in Saugus, has been put off again by the Superior Court.

McAmis, who remains in custody on a no-bail hold at Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, will return to court on March 22.

Ekelund and two girlfriends from Fullerton College had gone to San Diego with McAmis in February 2001. At the end of their trip, the other girls were safely delivered back to their homes, but Ekelund was never seen again.

EkelundMcAmis was always a person of interest, but until Orange County detectives reopened the case in 2008, there was not enough evidence to make an arrest. He was arrested October 29, 2010 and cooperated with police, directing forensic investigators to the Bouquet Canyon ranch.

It was there that he and his father had been working on a construction project 10 years ago, and where he buried the young woman’s body after allegedly strangling her at his Whittier apartment.

Ekelund’s mother, Nancy, never gave up hope that Lynsie would come home. When Lynsie’s skeletal remains were found at the ranch on November 12, 2010, she finally had some closure – certainly not the outcome she had hoped for, but at least she finally knew what had happened.

Nancy Ekelund and many of the investigators who worked on the case will be gathering at LARC Ranch at 11 a.m. Sunday, January 30 to say a final goodbye to Lynsie. According to Kathleen Sturkey, executive director at LARC Ranch, the memorial ceremony will include planting a tree in Lynsie’s honor and the release of pink balloons.

“That’s what we do when we lose someone here on the ranch,” she explained.
