The scholarship, named in tribute to Sgt. Ian T.D. Gelig, an Army paratrooper who was killed in Afghanistan in March 2010, is designed to honor all Santa Clarita Valley veterans by providing financial support to veterans and immediate family members who are pursuing higher education.
“McGinley demonstrated that he reflects the qualities and traits of Sgt. Gelig – duty, honor, loyalty, commitment to family and country, and a dedication to serve”, state Chris Angelo, SCV Chamber Chair. “Those are qualities we look for in all great Americans.”
Selection Committee Chair Dena Maloney commented, “The selection committee was so proud of all those that applied for the scholarship and was most impressed with Mr. McGinley’s pursuit of higher education and interest in continuing to serve.”
McGinley will receive his award at the Chamber’s annual Patriots Luncheon on July 12 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia. The Patriot Luncheon is an opportunity for the community to honor local veterans with all proceeds benefitting the Ian Gelig Memorial Scholarship Fund.
