Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) issued the following statement today after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a loss of 216,000 jobs in the month of August, bringing the national unemployment rate to a 26-year high of 9.7 percent:
“Families across California and the nation are struggling to cut costs and adjust to a strained job market, yet Democrats in Washington have failed to bring relief. Since the Majority passed its stimulus bill earlier this year, nearly 2.5 million people have lost their jobs. Last month, 216,000 additional jobs were lost, increasing the national unemployment rate from 9.4 percent to 9.7 percent.
“The doctrine of taxing and spending the nation into prosperity is a flawed plan. Real economic recovery begins with fiscal restraint and tax relief for working families and small businesses. Congress returns to Washington next week, and it is my hope we can work together on bipartisan policies that will get Californians and Americans back to work.”
