Recently, the House passed the Defense Appropriations Bill, which will grant money to the Santa Clarita Valley.

Today, Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon confirmed that national security funds to the Santa Clarita Valley were secured in the recently passed  House Defense Appropriations bill.

The bill includes the following projects:

$3.5 millionGround Combat System Open Architecture Electronic Enhancements (Santa Clarita) – By engineering the electronics layout of the Ground Combat Systems, the work done in this project will help the Department of Defense achieve more cost effective, lower risk upgrades to its combat vehicles as new technology becomes available.

$2.5 millionSmart Energetics Architecture for Missile Systems (Valencia ) – This important work is being performed to increase the accuracy, safety and reliability of offensive and defensive missile systems.  With an eye toward reducing weight, lowering power requirements and lowering production costs, this work will greatly enhance the options available to our men and women in uniform.

$5 million
Warrior UAV Sensor Upgrade – The Warrior UAVs are currently flying combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan .  By providing the funding to outfit each one with the most appropriate sensor equipment and in a timely manner, we are guaranteeing that our nation’s military has the tools to defend our country at home and abroad.

$1.1 million– Lithium-ion Battery Cell Production – Lithium-ion battery cells are considered a key in enabling the next generation of military satellite systems.  The funds provided in this bill will accelerate the time in which these important batteries become available to the Department of Defense.

Upon passage of the Defense Appropriations bill, McKeon made the following statement:

“Southern California is home to some of the most advanced technological research, development and evaluation for the Department of Defense and the funds secured in this bill ensure Santa Clarita Valley’s role in that continues at high levels,” said McKeon.

“As this funding bill moves through the legislative process, I will remain vigilant in protecting our domestic defense research capabilities and in providing funding for those
programs that are most important to Southern California and our nation.”

The above listed defense projects were included in the report to accompany the Fiscal Year 2008 Defense Appropriations bill that passed the House early Sunday morning.  The defense spending bill will now move to the U.S. Senate for a vote and later to conference between both Houses.  In order for the bill to become law, it must then be signed by the
President.

Marsha McLean, Mayor of the City of Santa Clarita , appreciates the Congressman’s efforts in obtaining the additional federal defense funds and believes it will be a
great asset to the Santa Clarita Valley.

“Congressman McKeon has long been a staunch advocate for small business in the Santa Clarita Valley and the funding in this bill serves as further proof of that,” stated
McLean .

“I am proud of the research contributions that our local businesses are making to the Department of Defense and am glad to see that our United States Representative is directly assisting in keeping that research within our community.”
