McKeon To Host Academy Luncheon Honoring Appointees

flagCongressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon is set to host his annual Academy Luncheon to honor students selected as appointees to United States Service Academies on Saturday at Santa Clarita City Hall.

Attending the luncheon are representatives of four academies of the United States service as well as the 14 students who have been appointed to the United States Service Academies.

The students appointed to The United States Air Force Academy are Joel Cramer of Academy of the Canyons, Ty McArthur of Hart High School, Trevor Shultz of Quartz High School, Desi Rodriguez of Saugus High School, and Kevin Carrington of Valencia High School.

Bethany Haskell of Serrano High School has been appointed to The United States Merchant Marine Academy.

The students appointed to The United States Military Academy at West Point are Jamie Molacek of Saugus High School, Kelsey Smith of West Ranch High School, and Rebecca Tummers of Little Rock High School.

The students appointed to The United States Naval Academy are Lauren Hendrix and Mathew Salo of Quartz Hill High School, Gavin Schelske of Canyon High School, Justin Shelton of Marine Military Academy, and Nolan O’Sullivan of Valencia High School.

In order for an applicant to be considered, he or she must be at least 17 but no older than 23 years of age and must be nominated by a member of the United States Senate or The House of Representatives. Academic record, extracurricular activities, physical aptitude, ACT and SAT scores, leadership ability, and medical qualifications are all taken into consideration for final appointment.

The competitive method is used in order to choose an appointee. For each vacancy, 10 nominations may be made and nominees must compete amongst themselves for final appointment that is to be determined by the admissions authorities.
