Santa Clarita Congressman Buck McKeon is a featured speaker at the Foreign Policy Initiative’s second annual FPI Forum today and tomorrow, November 15 and 16, where participants will hear leading experts weigh in on the theme of Restoring America’s Leadership of a Democratic World.
The event will feature panels on the impact of China’s rise on American foreign policy, U.S. policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan, the fight for democracy and human rights, and recent developments in the Middle East.
Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg will deliver remarks to close the conference on Tuesday. Senators McCain and Lieberman, along with the presumptive next House Armed Services Committee Chairman, Rep. Buck McKeon, will preview the foreign and defense policy agendas of the 112th Congress. Former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and current opposition figure Boris Nemtsov will assess prospects for democracy in Russia, and former Spanish President Jose Maria Aznar will discuss the foreign policy challenges facing the West.

Additional guests include Burmese dissident Win Min, Michele Dunne from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Ambassador Michael Kozak, who will discuss the fight for human rights and democracy. Lt. Gen. David Barno (Ret.), along with Daniel Markey from the Council on Foreign Relations, and Peter Bergen of the New America Foundation who will evaluate strategies for moving forward in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Ambassador Eric Edelman, Elliott Abrams from the Council on Foreign Relations, and Reuel Gerecht from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies will offer analysis of the situation in a changing Middle East. Carolyn Bartholomew of the U.S. – China Economic and Security Review Commission, Jacqueline Newmyer of the Long Term Strategy Group, and Derek Scissors of the Heritage Foundation will discuss the influence of Beijing’s global ambitions and domestic challenges. An additional panel of experts will discuss foreign policy in the 112th Congress.
