Joyce Carson KHTS Mercedes-Benz Of Valencia Santa Clarita Unsung Hero

Joyce Carson is this week’s KHTS Santa Clarita Unsung Hero, proudly presented by Mercedes-Benz of Valencia.

Joyce Carson, Santa Clarita’s 2001 Woman of the Year, has been living in the Santa Clarita Valley for more than 40 years and taught 32 years in our local Sulphur Springs School District. Now retired, she continues to stay actively involved in the Santa Clarita community. She is this week’s KHTS Santa Clarita Unsung Hero, proudly presented by Mercedes-Benz of Valencia.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Cal State Northridge in 1968 where she majored in Sociology and minored in Journalism.

“In junior high and high school I was really interested in Journalism,” Joyce said. “But Journalism was not popular for woman back then so I thought it would be tough to get a job so I thought, maybe I should go into teaching.”

Joyce did just that, she got two Master’s Degrees, one in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Early Childhood Education, the other in Marriage and Family Therapy and became a teacher.

“I taught at Leona Cox, Valley View and my last 12 years were all with Sulpher Springs Elementary School,” Joyce said. “All of which was kindergarten and first grade, there was a lot of fresh energy.”

Joyce has been very active in the Santa Clarita Valley for over 35 years. She started her volunteer work with the Child and Family Center back in 1984.

The Child & Family Center helps build a healthy Santa Clarita Valley by providing mental health, behavioral and education services to children, adults and families.

She has served on their Board of Directors and chaired their major fundraiser, “Taste of the Town” four times, and their golf tournament in 2003 and 2004. She also chaired their ‘annual giving campaign’, Board Development Committee and their Advisory Committee in 2009 and 2010.

She served from 2006 to 2009 on the Board of the Betty Ferguson Foundation. In 2008 and 2009 she chaired the Advisory Committee for the Betty Ferguson Foundation.

This list goes on for all of the ways Joyce has been honored. Besides the ‘woman of the year’ award, Joyce has also received the Zonta Status of Woman award in 1997 and again in 2004. and PTA Honorary Service Awards from Leona Cox and Sulphur Springs Community Schools. She received the City of Santa Clarita “Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year” in 2004.

She has served on the School Site Councils of Emblem, Valley View, Leona Cox and Sulphur Springs Schools. She has also served on the Advisory Boards for KHTS radio, the Michael Hoefflin Cancer Foundation, the Child and Family Center, Betty Ferguson Foundation and the HMNMH Woman’s Philanthropy Advisory Council.

Joyce has been an active member of the Sheriff’s Advisory Board and the Santa Clarita Arts Council.

She was a member of the Anti-Gang Task Force and did volunteer work for the chamber as an Ambassador, She continues to be a hostess for HMNMH hospital’s Home Tour, and helped organize teams and/ or raise money for the Heart Association, United Way, Relay for Life, the American Cancer Association and the Michael Hoefflin Children’s Cancer Foundation.

In Nov. of 2009, Joyce was awarded the “Volunteer of the Decade” award from the Child and Family Center Foundation where she has volunteered since 1984. In 2010 Joyce became a Volunteer Ambassador for HMNMH, where she visits patients one afternoon a week.

“When I’m gone I want people to say that I care, that I care about the ones that I’m with and the ones that I don’t know and that I did my part to make our community a better place,” said Joyce.

When not volunteering, Joyce and her husband Doron love to travel and golf. Joyce also loves baking, gardening, and reading and is the member of two book clubs.
