Megan Smith works as an assistant technician at Happy Pets Veterinary Center in Valencia and volunteers once a week at the Wildlife Care of Ventura County in Simi Valley. Megan began volunteering at the age of 14 and has volunteered at old Burbank Animal Shelter, Los Angeles Zoo, Feline Conservation Center, Placerita Canyon Nature Center and Wildlife Care of Ventura County.

“I always volunteered because gaining good experience working with animals is difficult and the field is very competitive,” said Smith. “So gaining vast amounts of experience through volunteering helps me stand out a bit.”

Megan is currently taking classes at College of the Canyons and is working towards a Bachelors in Biology to become a register veterinary technician. With both schooling and volunteering, Megan has had to find a balance between the two and her social life. In the end, Megan values the experience she has gained throughout her volunteering and advises other students to take heed.

“If someone wants to do both school and volunteering, it is hard and time consuming. But if you have a passion for animals it won’t matter,” said Megan.
