Metrolink Service Suspended After Sylmar Crash

UPDATED 10:59 a.m. Wednesday

Investigators are still on the scene of a 7 a.m. incident involving a northbound Metrolink train that struck a vehicle on the tracks near Sylmar. Metrolink officials hope to have service restored before noon.

Metrolink service was suspended this morning after the train struck a car near the intersection of San Fernando Road and Branford Street.

Metrolink spokesperson Angie Starr said that the Antelope Valley 201 was northbound from Los Angeles enroute to Lancaster at 7:05 a.m. (the train departed Los Angeles at 6:35 a.m.) when a traffic accident occurred on San Fernando Road that propelled a vehicle into the path of the oncoming train.

“The vehicle had been involved in another accident,” she explained, adding that the train-car collision did not happen at a crossing.

The driver and a 6-month-old infant passenger in one of the cars involved in the off-track accident suffered significant injuries and were transported to an area hospital. The infant is reported to be in extremely critical condition.

Starr said that officials at the scene confirmed that these injuries were caused by the initial accident, not the collision with the train. She said that 30 passengers on the Metrolink train had minor injuries and that there was minor damage to the train.

Passengers from the northbound train will be taken to the Sylmar station and transported to their destination. Since the trains operate on a single track at that location, all service in both directions is stopped.
