Through California Transportation Agency grants totaling $244 million statewide, the Antelope Valley and Ventura train lines will gain nine new fuel-efficient locomotives.

About $41 million will help buy the engines which will provide cleaner, safer, more reliable and faster travel by replacing seven older trains and acquiring two new ones, according to a press release.

The Antelope Valley and Ventura County lines are both within Los Angeles County and aims to give commuters more connectivity to current Amtrak and future High Speed Rail services.

“Both project elements contribute to increased ridership and reduced GHG emissions, and benefit disadvantaged communities throughout the Metrolink five service area. New locomotives feature both crash energy management and Positive Train Control technology that dramatically improve passenger and operator safety,” the press release said.

The grants for the new engines stem from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which aims to support high-quality public transportation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions which cause climate change.

“When public transportation is efficient, affordable and enjoyable more Californians use it and that improves quality-of-life for everyone,” said California State Transportation Agency Secretary Brian Kelly. “These grants help support nearly $720 million in transportation investments in clean, affordable and low-stress commuting and traveling options by improving the quality and reliability of public transportation choices.”
