Military Mothers Feted At Dinner

A dinner was recently given at College of the Canyons in the newly remodeled Student Center cafeteria honoring Blue and Gold Star Mothers, Prayer Angels For the Military and military families living in the Santa Clarita Valley.  The dinner was prepared and served by American Mothers, Inc., which is the official sponsor of Mother’s Day here in the United States.

Chairing the event were Dorothy DeVore, California State President of  American Mothers, Inc.;  Myrna Condie, 2009 California Mother of the Year and Cherry Field, 2009 California Young Mother of the Year along with chapter members of American Mothers and friends.

Guests of honor enjoyed a program which began with the U.S. Coast Guard presenting the Flag Ceremony.   Army Veteran, Rodrigo Ceja touched hearts as he expressed gratitude to be back home alive and thanked the many supporters.  This was followed by the song, “God Bless America”, sung by Stacey Sanders.

A video was played, which had been pre-recorded by Congressman, Howard “Buck” McKeon, proclaiming support for our troops and giving recognition to the many  sacrifices of the mothers, fathers and families of the military.

Patriotism was again on display as W. Harold Petersen read a poem which he had written entitled, “Patriots Then, Patriots Now.”   The concluding speaker was Dr. Greggory R. DeVore, a fetal medicine specialist who spoke of the great abilities and accomplishments of his mother and other women here in the United States.

MyrnaquiltladyAt the end of the evening a special quilt was presented to the Blue Star Mothers and Prayer Angels, along with a story telling about the creation of the quilt.

It seems that a certain lady, (Diane Miller), had made a beautiful quilt top and decided to donate it to charity, but did not know which one.  Shortly afterwards, Myrna Condie called and asked if Diane knew of someone who could help make a quilt for the Blue and Gold Star Mothers to present at the upcoming dinner.

Diane knew she had made the quilt with stars pieced in blue and gold (yellow) fabrics.   She was touched and decided this was the perfect home for the quilt top.  She named it “From Sea to Shining Sea” and donated it to the cause.

The next step was to find a quilter.  Another miracle happened when Joyce Wilkinson of Newhall agreed to quilt it as her donation to help with the event!  It was truly an inspired quilt of love.

It was a perfect ending to a wonderful night that had been organized to honor our military mothers and other family members of those who protect our country.  Attendees expressed their appreciation for having been remembered with such a wonderful evening.
