Million Meal Mission On May Day

millionmealmarathonOn Sunday, May 1, church services at 12 campuses around Santa Clarita will involve some hands-on  service; packing boxes of meals for children in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Africa.

Real Life Church will be the hub of the activity for the first Million Meals Marathon, which will provide a million meals to Children of the Nations, which will be distributing the food to the thousands of children they care for daily. It is anticipated that – as a result of this massive one-day volunteer effort – 2,739 hungry children will be fed a nutritionally balanced meal every day for a full year.

“This is a great opportunity for our entire community to come together and learn about worldwide hunger and do something about it,” said Brandon Beard, Real Life Church pastor and director of the Million Meals Marathon. “It is our hope that people from all over Santa Clarita will go to participating churches and help package meals.”

The meals are nutritionally balanced, ready-to-cook and consist of rice, protein-packed lentils, dehydrated vegetables, spices and chicken powder.  After the meals are packed in boxes, they will be dropped off at the Real Life Church parking lot to be loaded into four 40-foot sea containers for immediate shipping.

The meal packs, sealed in industrial-grade plastic bags, are waterproof and have a shelf life of seven years. Once in-country, cooks at the feeding centers customize these basic meals with traditional flavors and spices, supplementing with meat when available.

According to the UNICEF, a child dies from hunger-related causes every seven seconds and every year, nearly 5 million hungry children die.
