Mom Driving Getaway Car Doesn’t Get Far

Best Buy shoplifters fill cart, fight with security in escape attempt.

[view:node_ad=5] It had the trappings of a warm holiday story, a mother waiting for a group of children to return to her, bearing gifts and good tidings.
Except this mother was sitting in her car at the curb of the Best Buy store on Bouquet Canyon Road Saturday night with the engine running.

When her flock returned, they came running, with several security officers in hot pursuit. After all five passengers got in, mama gunned the Kia and started heading home to Palmdale.

The story goes that about 9:30 Saturday night, five people – one adult and four juveniles – entered the store and immediately loaded their cart with electronics. They headed for the door and the awaiting vehicle, but security tried to stop them and a scuffle ensued.

Grabbing what they could from the cart, the party of five ran towards the getaway car and hit the freeway, but sheriff’s deputies were way ahead of them, stopping the car on the 138 enroute to the Antelope Valley.

The four young men are now in custody at Juvenile Hall in Sylmar. Their in-store adult, Alex Thomas, 40, is being held at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station on possible felony charges, in lieu of $50,000 bail.

The mother of one or more of the juveniles, and the one who was driving the getaway car, is Carolyn Rollison, 42. She is in custody at the Santa Clarita Valley station as well on suspicion of felony charges, but her bail is $86,938. When deputies ran a check on her, they found a few warrants that need some holiday attention.

All are due in court on Tuesday.
