“Cheerio” the horse, “Sassy” the Yorkie and almost 1,000 other homeless pets found a place to live with help from Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, county officials said Thursday.

“For more than two decades, Antonovich has raised awareness of the countless abandoned animals in L.A. County shelters in need of loving homes,” said Tony Bell, Antonovich spokesman.
Every week at the Board of Supervisors meeting, Antonovich presents an animal in need of a home from one of Los Angeles County’s six Animal Care Centers, Bell said.
To date, all of the featured animals — more than 960, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, a horse and a guinea pig — have found loving homes, Bell said.
Some of the pets were abandoned and neglected, and many more are available for adoption, Bell said.
The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control chooses the animal each week that Antonovich presents, Bell said.
The general criteria for the pets — and all animals that are deemed adoptable, is that they be spayed or neutered, not ill, and have no history of biting or hurting anyone, he added.
During Antonovich’s Pet of the Week presentation, officials provide information about the animal including sex, breed and age, as well as a telephone number for anyone interested in adoption.
This adoption program also airs online during the Board of Supervisors’ live broadcast meeting.
