Mormon Church Enters Day Of Service April 25

Under the banner of “Mormon Helping Hands”, 20 thousand members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from San Louis Obispo to San Diego have set aside April 25 to serve their local communities.

In Santa Clarita, the work will stretch across the valley.

Gary Larkins, Public Affairs coordinator for the Church locally stated, ” Planning for our “Mormon Helping Hands’ day of service began with a simple request to then Mayor Bob Kellar and City Manager, Ken Pulskamp.  What could 800 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints do to help the City of Santa Clarita and surrounding community?”

Rick Gould, Director of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services department then coordinated 15 projects for the group across the Santa Clarita Valley.

Projects will include graffiti clean up, planting ground cover in parks and painting the Senior Center in Newhall, which will involve three professional painters along with 40 volunteers and the help of City Councilman Bob Kellar.

Included in the day of service, 400 to 500 Church members, along with Congressman Buck McKeon, will be at Castaic Lake planting trees, ground cover and painting buoys. Richard Patterson coordinated these efforts with the help of Lori Bennet, onsite director of Castaic Lake recreation facilities, and “The Friends of Castaic Lake”.
