Movember at Sierra VistaThe Sierra Vista campaign started on Monday, Nov. 18 and ends Friday, coinciding with a visit from Los Angeles Kings Fan Development and Kings alumnus Daryl Evans on Wednesday.

Evans spoke to the students, stressing the importance of engaging in physical activity every day. He encouraged them to find a sport or physical activity that they enjoy, because physical fitness often helps students find a close-knit social group.

Evans said that becoming a professional athlete helped him to develop discipline that he would use later in life.

Daryl Evans“I learned to appreciate it more post career,” he said. “…I work seven days a week, and I don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life.”

He told the students that consistent physical activity will give them more energy and help them succeed.

“Little is never too little,” he said in closing. “A lot is never enough.”

The students then had the opportunity to play “street hockey” in the gym, guided by members of the Kings Fan Development team.

Sierra Vista Principal Mark Crawford said that the Kings come to the school every year, and that this year it coincided perfectly with the Mustache Movember campaign, which also encourages fitness and health.

Daryl Evans at Sierra VistaThe school decided to promote Movember and men’s health after the Sierra Vista Civics Club held a drive for breast cancer awareness and women’s health in October, raising more than $2,000.

Students and staff who donate money this week will receive a mustache sticker or stick-on mustache to wear in honor of men’s health.

About Movember

The Movember Campaign relies on the power of a mustache to convey a message about the importance of men’s health.

The growth of a new moustache prompts a conversation, which in turn generates awareness and educates people on the health issues men face. Awareness and education then prompts people to take action and change behavior, which is changing and saving lives today,” according to the Movember website.

Specifically, Movember raises awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health, encouraging both and men and women to visit a doctor regularly and open up to friends and family about health issues.
