It started with a low rumble and then crashed over the valley with a sound that could only come from a jet, but that is where the facts end.
Numerous residents have reported hearing and seeing a “jet” flying at a low altitude and very fast over Santa Clarita between 8 and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs station confirms that they received calls about something flying over the city at that time, but because no laws were broken, didn’t file a report.
Edwards Air Force Base, was contacted about the mysterious plane, but officials stated that Santa Clarita is out of their flying area and test flights are never flown over populated areas.
Military jets often fly over Santa Clarita in route to Point Mugu Air Station, but EAFB officials say that those flights take place at 20,000 feet or more and are never as low as Tuesday’s reports.
March Air Force Base in Riverside was also contacted and according to Sgt. Megan Crushe, no planes left Tuesday from the base.
“There are no training routes in [Santa Clarita], and typically planes don’t fly that low over populated areas,” said Sgt. Crushe. “It’s strange to us.”
One resident reported seeing two jets following another object lit by red flashing lights.

One possible answer to the mystery of the evening’s fly-by could be that the plane or planes were privately-owned fighter jets, which, according to a pilot who asked to remain anonymous, are very common.
Another solution offered by an officials at EAFB, was that the planes were returning from performing a fly-over at a local sporting event.
