McKeon makes statement on assessment results
Following this week’s release of 4th – 8th grade reading and math assessment results on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as “the Nation’s Report Card,” the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee’s Senior Republican, Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA), issued the following statement:
“The 2007 Nation’s Report Card confirms what we already knew – student achievement is on the rise, achievement gaps are narrowing, and greater numbers of students are at or above basic and proficient levels in the fundamentals of reading and mathematics.
“These results are good news for students, parents, teachers, and schools. They are also a stark reminder that we cannot and must not back away from the accountability, flexibility, and parental choice that are at the heart of the No Child Left Behind Act.
“Reform is taking hold in schools across the nation. As Congress proceeds with reauthorization of NCLB, we must be steadfast in our commitment to the law’s core principles.”
