New Phase Of Eco Friendly Park To Begin Construction

khts_inthecommunity2Parks around our town are a staple for the city and provide a fun place for kids or a quiet place to relax outdoors. There are already 19 parks within the City of Santa Clarita, and we are about to get another one.

The City of Santa Clarita will host a half hour event marking the start of Phase II of its new Discovery Park at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 25.

The park will be built along the banks of the Santa Clara River off of Canyon View Drive in Canyon County.

This “passive” river park is a first for the city, and is designed to reverse ecological damages while encouraging barrier-free interaction with the natural environment.

“Before construction for Discovery Park began, non-native species, illegal dumping and off-road vehicle use plagued the site, which is recognized as a Significant Ecological Area,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “Once completed, the park’s design will help reverse ecological damages caused by misuse, while encouraging environmental protection and growth.”

Phase II of the project will add a paved bike path, bike racks, benches, picnic areas, open play areas complete with fun climbing boulders, a grassy meadow, parking lot and other amenities to the site.

Discovery Park’s design aims to balance new recreational options for residents with increased environmental protection.

The park will offer opportunities for education, wildlife observation and passive recreation such as photography, yoga, landscape painting and more, with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

Most of the park’s 25 acres will be kept natural and will be protected from future development.

The site will also put environmentally-friendly features to use, including drought-resistant plants, a state-of-the-art computerized irrigation management system, native and native-adapted landscaping, low volume irrigation and permeable surfaces to promote water retention and decrease water consumption.

Discovery Park’s construction is funded through the $1.8 million Los Angeles Regional Park and Open Space District and its Proposition A grant program, which encourages projects with sustainable landscaping and irrigation practices.
