Breast cancer awareness brings profit and non-profit together

Three years ago at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast, Jill Jackson, founder of Dessert Alert, met Colleen Shaffer, founder of Circle of Hope, Inc. That meeting quickly began a collaboration focused on increasing breast cancer awareness in the most delectable way.

Circle of Hope is a non-profit that has been financially assisting uninsured or underinsured individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment in the Santa Clarita Valley since 2004. The non-profit is now teaming up with Dessert Alert to raise funds and heighten awareness about breast cancer.

Here’s how they’re going to do it. Dessert Alert has created an original dessert, “tickled pink cups” which will debut at the upcoming 4th Annual Circle of Hope Theatrical Teas.

Celebrating women’s breast health, these round spice blondies are described as “not quite a cupcake, not quite a brownie,” and are topped with pink butter cream frosting and feature a tiny pink ribbon.

In creating these anatomically correct deserts; Jackson says that it was a way to celebrate survival. Laughter, she says, can be a powerful tool in coping with this terrifying disease. “When someone is diagnosed, their families and friends are also impacted, and humor is an important way of dealing with the trauma.”

Shaffer, a metastatic breast cancer survivor agrees that sometimes those coping with the disease just need to have a moment of fun to ease the anxiety. Having recently indulged in the desserts, Shaffer said, “Without the laughter, we wouldn’t be able to ‘bare’ the reality.

Jill Jackson may also have another reason to create the desserts; her mother and grandmother were both breast cancer survivors. She has been donating her treats to the COH Theatrical Tea for three years and vows to stay committed to creating awareness about early detection of breast cancer. “The best awareness is breast awareness,” she says.

The “tickled pink cups” will be a seasonal item available through Dessert Alert during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since 10% of these proceeds will be donated to COH, it is a way to raise funds and keep the spirit of hope alive. For more information or to place an order, visit their website at or call (661) 753-9269.

COH’s Theatrical Teas will take place on September 29th and 30th from noon to 3pm in Newhall. Guests will indulge in an array of sweet and savory delicacies while enjoying live entertainment. The Teas also feature a wandering magician, angel card readings, a raffle, and a silent auction. Tickets for the Tea may be purchased on online at or for more information call (661) 254-5218.
