Newhall Community Center Karate Team Takes Home Top Honors

Newhall Community team scores highest out of thousands of competitors.

 

Santa Clarita’s own karate team brought home three first place championships and two second place trophies from the 2008 International Martial Arts Championships in Las Vegas in June.

Ten members of the Newhall Community Center's team traveled to Las Vegas, where they competed against more than 2,000 participants from as far away as England, Canada, Guatemala and Mexico in an exhibition of martial arts skills.

First place World Champions are Zaira Medina, 18; Cristal Flores, 12 and adult competitor Ruben Caldera, 44. Second place winners include Nidia Vargas, 20 and Juan Medina, 17.

In addition, earning fourth place honors from the wide field of competitors were Karina Ruiz, 16; Elybeth Cervantes, 13; Jennifer Perez, 16; Jonathan Perez, 11 and Carlos Cazares, 17.

The Newhall Community Center's karate team is taught by volunteer instructor Dave Moreno who has coached the award winning team for more than three years. For more information about the Newhall Community Center karate program, contact Efren Galindo, Center Sports Coordinator (661) 286-4006.
