All concerts will be held at Wiley Canyon Elementary School, and a $3 donation will be requested at the door to support the district’s music program.
NSD’s instrumental music program works with more than 800 students and has withstood budget cuts for 35 years. Another 600 students participate in the school choruses. Music Makers PTA supports the district’s music program through fundraising and concert events.
“Beginning Orchestra students will be experiencing their first big concert. They will be playing classics such as ‘Ode to Joy,’ ‘Old McDonald Had a Band,’ ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and other selections,” said Monica Kaplan, a member of the Music Makers PTA.
Beginning students received a checklist at the beginning of the school year with many benchmark songs to challenge their musicianship. Students who checked off all their benchmark songs receive an orchestra medal.
Kaplan also said that students in the Intermediate Strings will perform “Staccato March” and “French Folk Song.” Intermediate Band will be playing “Let’s Go Band II” by Albert Aronheim.
The Advanced Strings will be performing “Country Wedding Dance” by Smetana and “Gargoyles.” The Advanced Band will perform “Nottingham Castle” by Larry Daehn, among others.
NSD’s 80-member All-District Honor Orchestra will present “Egmont Overture,” by Beethoven, as well as “Western Hoedown” and “Aboriginal Rituals.”
The Chorus will explore many genres and styles of songs this spring, including “God Bless The USA” by Lee Greenwood, “Baseball Fever with Take me Out to the Ball Game,” by Cristi Cary Miller, “Shooting Star” by Andy Beck and the Scottish folk song “Loch Lomond.”
There will also be several featured artists who auditioned in April to perform solos at the spring concert.
“The level of skill of these students is amazing and inspiring,” Kaplan said.
