Newhall Schools To Standardize School Day

nsd-logoAn agreement with teachers in the Newhall School District is going to lead to additional instructional time for students in grades 1-3 starting in January 2012.

Governing Board members and the administration in Newhall proposed that primary grade students attend school for the same amount of time as upper graders attend currently. After lengthy negotiations with teachers, an agreement was struck on the implementation of this change.

Hundreds of thousands of students throughout Los Angeles County attend school on this schedule and in the Santa Clarita Valley, Castaic and Sulphur Springs 1st through 3rd graders go to school for the same amount of time as their upper grade peers. In Saugus 3rd through 6th graders attend for the same day length.

Board president Suzan Solomon points out that this schedule “provides additional time for addressing subject areas to develop the ‘whole child.’ This includes more time for art, music, PE, science, social studies. Teachers can use the time to expand all these areas or concentrate even more on the language arts and mathematics needs of the students.”

Current research points out that time alone is not the answer – but time directed by highly trained teachers who assist students that will affect achievement and will allow for all those subjects that are not found on state tests at the primary grades, such as the arts, science, and social studies.

A single dismissal time in the district will also be a benefit to families with multiple children, allowing one visit to the school at the end of the day.

As a “green” side benefit, it will keep what was an early dismissal wave of cars and busses off the roads.

The new schedule for students will start in January 2012 so that teachers have time to plan for the difference in time and so that parents can adjust routines and child care arrangements.
