For the week of June 6, 2011 the KHTS Community Resource Station hosted Family Promise of Santa Clarita. This service organization was featured on KHTS Non-Profit Spotlight.
The Non Profit Spotlight is hosted by Janice Murray which airs on Mondays at 10am on AM-1220 KHTS.
In 1982, Karen Olson was a marketing executive who developed promotional campaigns for consumer products. One morning, on her way to a meeting, she saw a homeless woman, someone she’d seen over and over again on her way to work.
She decided to buy a sandwich for the woman. The stranger accepted the sandwich but asked for something else – a moment to be heard, to be comforted, and to be considered as more than a mere statistic on a cold street corner.
Soon, Karen and her two young sons began frequent trips to New York to hand out sandwiches to the homeless. As she came to know some of the city’s homeless people, she began to understand the profound loss and disconnection that homelessness causes. That understanding turned into an enduring commitment.
The Family Promise Network Program brings shelter, meals, and support services to families without homes. Family Promise Networks are a cost-efficient, effective, and replicable community response to family homelessness. Because they make use of existing community resources, they can be implemented quickly, without major start-up costs. There are six components to a network program are host/support Congregations, day center, transportaion, fundraising, social service agencies, & volunteers.
KHTS would like to thank Carrie & Larry Comp & Chris Najarro for stopping by the Community resource Station.
