Habitat For Humanity

For the week of October 31, 2011 the KHTS Community Resource Station hosted Habitat of Santa Clarita. This service organization was featured on KHTS Non-Profit Spotlight.

The overwhelming need for housing in Los Angeles County has provided HFH GLA with a unique opportunity to change lives in our neighborhoods.  Los Angeles ranks as one of the least affordable housing areas in the U.S. and yet Habitat for Humanity is one of the few – if not only – affordable homeownership programs that serves families and individuals earning 30-80% of the median family income.  Cost burden and overcrowding are the most serious problems experienced by very low-income area residents.  Working with volunteers, families and individuals, corporations, congregations and donors we are able to tackle this important housing issue throughout the Los Angeles area.  They are dedicated to making homeownership possible for low-income, hardworking families.

Habitat For Humanity does not give away our houses.  They require  Habitat for Humanity homeowners to invest up to 500 hours of Sweat Equity to help build their home and each qualify for a 0% interest mortgage.

Since 1990, they have built and rehabilitated more than 350 houses in neighborhoods all across Los Angele County.  Shelter is a basic human need and Habitat for Humanity strives to achieve its goal of eliminating substandard housing by making simple, sustainable and affordable housing a reality for all families and individuals.

On November 5, more than 200 volunteers, community leaders, celebrities and others will help a local veteran and his family rehabilitate their home and celebrate the launch of a new program aimed at improving living conditions and providing suitable housing for veterans.

The event, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the home of Joshua and Windie Murphy in Valencia, located at 22926 Magnolia Glenn, is part of the public launch of SCV Habitat for Heroes.  The program is an effort by Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys (SF/SCV) in partnership with local community and business leaders, nonprofit organizations, and others.

SCV Habitat for Heroes is focused on ensuring veterans are supported through home modifications, education, and supportive services that will help prevent them from common house-related problems that civilian veterans face.  The program will also establish the Santa Clarita Valley as a leading community for civilian veterans and their families.

Thanks to Kim Cherney, Doreen Shine, Donna Deutchman, Mike Mizrahi, Carl Goldman, and Andrew Kwok for being with us.
