Norstom To Be Honored At Kings Game Saturday

sportskingsMany of Mattias Norstrom’s former Kings teammates will be at Staples Center this Saturday night to help honor the former Kings captain/defenseman as part of “Mattias Norstrom Night” at Staples Center before the Kings host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, October 30.

As part of the evening, Norstrom will be honored during a special pre-game on-ice ceremony which is expected to begin at 7:38 p.m.  Scheduled to participate in the ceremony — which will also feature a special video — to help salute Norstrom are former Kings players Luc Robitaille, Rob Blake, Ian Laperriere, Craig Johnson, Glen Murray, Derek Armstrong, Jamie Storr, Mathieu Schneider and Nelson Emerson .

As part of the evening, the first 10,000 fans in attendance at Saturday’s game will receive a commemorative “Mattias Norstrom Night Rally Towel” (view it by clicking here).

Norstrom, the club’s former captain, played in 780 (out of a possible 813) games with the team and ranks second in games played by a defenseman and fifth overall.  An Ironman, Norstrom missed only 33 games during his Kings tenure.  He had a 169 consecutive games played streak, which ran from Oct. 2, 1999 through Oct. 13, 2001.  He missed only three games (of a possible 328) in a four-season span from 1999-00 through 2002-03.

Norstrom totaled 903 career regular season NHL games with the Kings, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers from 1993-08.

The Kings’ first European-born Captain from 2001-07, Norstrom – a native of Stockholm, Sweden – also played in 56 career NHL playoff games, including 28 postseason games with the Kings.

An All-Star in 2004 while a member of the Kings, Norstrom earned the club’s Most Outstanding Defenseman award four times; the club’s Best Defensive Player award five times; the club’s Most Inspirational Player award two times; and the club’s Unsung Hero award three times.

Internationally, Norstrom represented his native Sweden in numerous competitions including the Olympics twice (1998 and 2002 – he had to withdraw from the 2006 team due to injury), World Championships (highlighted by a gold medal in 1998), the World Cup of Hockey and the World Junior Championships.

The Kings later this season will announce their “Legends Night Series” presented by McDonald’s.”  Mattias Norstrom Night is not a part of the Legends Night Series presented by McDonald’s.

The Kings (6-2-0) continue their five-game road trip tonight in Chicago against the Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks at 5:30 p.m. (PT) before concluding the trip in Dallas on Thursday night.  Both games will be broadcast on KHTS AM1220.
