Fifty students from the College of the Canyons nursing program graduated Wednesday in the traditional pinning ceremony marking the completion of each nurse’s training.

Celebrating the accomplishments of newly graduated registered nurses, the pinning ceremony serves as a symbolic welcoming for all those entering the nursing profession.

The ceremony goes back to the traditions of Florence Nightengale.  According to Cynthia Dorroh, Division Dean for Allied Health and Public Safety at College of the Canyons, Nightengale believed in lifelong learning and graduation marks a beginning of that journey.

“The pinning ceremony represents a special transition when the student has completed their foundations in nursing,” Dorroh said.  “And it represents a ceremony where they step across a crossroads and leave the role of student and become the role of colleague.”

Since 2000, the College of the Canyons nursing program has worked diligently to address the statewide nursing shortage.  Each year a minimum of 100 new students are admitted to the program. Currently there are 214 nursing students enrolled.
