Oak Trees A Historic Reminder Of Our Past

BareoaktreeThe City of Santa Clarita is a relatively new city; yet the city has strong historic roots which make Santa Clarita residents proud. Many historic events have taken place here, when the SCV was nothing more than fields of wildflowers and trees. The oak trees of our valley have seen a lot of change, since they date back hundreds of years.

Because of the strong historic value of the oaks, when the city was founded in 1987, its first ordinance was to protect these magnificent sentinels. The oak tree ordinance was created to provide regulatory measures designed to protect and preserve the life of oak trees in our city.

The oak trees not only provide for great shade in the summertime, but they also make for beautiful landscapes in residential and commercial areas. Therefore, it is extremely important to know how to protect these historic giants.

Roy Boak, owner of Roy Boak Tree Service, explains the following necessary steps to maintain and protect the oaks:

• During the summer it is important that the oaks receive enough water, however, always be careful not to overwater.

• Keep ground area around the oaks clear by keeping other plants at least 6 feet away from the base of the tree.

The use of the tree’s own leaves is the best way to fertilize the oaks. To maintain tree health, oaks require pruning every four years.

Make sure to hire a certified arborist recognized by the City of Santa Clarita for pruning or other services of the magnificent oaks.
