Officials Extend Statewide Flex Alert Through Wednesday

Officials have extended the statewide Flex Alert through Wednesday, July 19, 2006 as a regional heat wave continues throughout California.

Californians are asked to conserve electricity at peak by:

  • Turning off unneeded lights, computers and appliances.
  • Setting air conditioner (if you use one) thermostats to 78° F when home and 85° F or off when away.
  • Using major appliances after 7 p.m.

The California Independent System Operator (ISO), the nonprofit organization that manages the state’s electricity grid, issued the Flex Alert, stating:

A regional heat wave continues throughout California and the west and new record power demand is expected as hot temperatures drive the use of electricity to new levels. The current record peak demand of 45,431 megawatts was set a year ago this week on July 20, 2005. The ISO Control Area also continues to be under a Restricted Maintenance Operations Notice, notifying owners of power plants and transmission lines not to perform any unapproved maintenance work. ( See full press release from California ISO.)

We all need to pitch in, Californians. Conserving energy during peak hours is a powerful no-cost way to help prevent outages. In addition, conserving peak energy saves you, your business and the state money and helps protect the environment.
