On Eve Of Birthday, City Recognizes Key Officials

khts_citymatters_scvlogoCouncilmember Marsha McLean was officially sworn in as Santa Clarita Mayor at last night’s City Council meeting. She replaces Councilmember Laurene Weste in the role.

Santa Clarita’s mayor is selected from the seated City Council on a yearly rotating basis. With the recent movement, Councilmember Laurie Ender becomes Mayor Pro Tem, and will thus become Mayor in 2012.

During her acceptance speech, McLean noted her past advocacy as a member of the Council, including the creation of the Open Space Preservation District, the enhancement of the Metrolink and the construction of the new library in Old Town Newhall.

“While this is a large list, it is by no means exclusive of the things we will be working on,” she said.

McLean also noted the need for involved citizenry, and the importance of public communication with the mayor.

“I want to make sure our citizens are able to access every bit of material,” she said. “It is extremely important for concerned residents to know where they can have all of their questions answered.”

Though he will still work with the City on a consultant basis, the meeting likely marked the last for City Attorney Carl Newton.

Newton, who has served in the role since the City’s incorporation in 1987, will step down come January 1 of next year. Assistant City Attorney Joe Montes will take his place.

“It’s been a blessing,” said Newton. “This is a unique community – just the most intelligent and sophisticated people.”

City Manager Ken Pulskamp presented Newton with the Key to the City and a plaque signed by fellow City officials that pictured Newton in a Hawaiian shirt – a poignant symbol of his future retirement.

Speaking to the attendees, Newton said, “You are fortunate to live here. I was just so lucky to be involved with all of you.”

Today marks the City of Santa Clarita’s 23rd year of existence.
