Charity run/walk to support SCV Food Pantry
Whether you’re interested in setting a personal best, or just looking for a nice Sunday stroll, you’ll get your chance this Sunday when the SCV Food Pantry hosts its 16th Annual 5k Run Against Hunger.
Starting at 8:00 a.m., runners and walkers will start out from Newhall Park, heading down and back the South Fork Trail by the Santa Clara River. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest runners and drawing winners, as well as to the local junior high school that musters the most participants.
“We have a friendly competition between the junior highs; the one with the most participants wins an award. And for many years it’s been Sierra Vista. It’s always a lot of fun,” said Pat Thayer, a volunteer at the pantry, “We really appreciate all the contributions of the community. [They] have really stepped up and provided extra food when we’ve most needed it.”
Runners and walkers can register on the day of the run for $30, starting at 7:00 a.m. Registration for those older than 60 or younger than 12 is $25. All participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments and be entered in post-race prize drawings. The event is sanctioned by the Southern California Track and Field Association, and runners interested in accumulating points will be able to do so.
For 23 years, the SCV Food Pantry has provided supplemental food to local families in need. The volunteer-based organization serves approximately 50-70 families each day and teams with the local Senior Center to provide food to more than 20 homebound seniors each month. Food Pantry clients are Santa Clarita Valley residents and meet federal maximum income guidelines. For more information about the run or donations to the pantry, call 661-255-9078.
