OutWest Brings The Wild West To Main Street

A new shop is preserving the culture of the old west.

OutWest, a new store and performance venue which reflects the spirit of the West, will have its grand opening from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 27.

The store is part of the dynamic renovation of Old Town Newhall and the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce will officially cut the ribbon to the entrance of the store at 5:30.

OutWest is a western boutique that fuses western-style entertainment with western history and culture.

Outside the store a bronze saddle in terrazzo tile honors silver screen legend Rex Allen. His niece,  Julie Ream is scheduled to be on hand for the opening.

Ream strives to preserve America’s Western heritage and cowboy culture. Born into a family rich with Western entertainers, she is also the granddaughter of Taylor “Cactus Mack” McPeters; stuntman, musician, and sidekick to Roy Rogers and Gene Autry.

She is also the kin of “bad guy” Glenn Strange, famous for his role as “Sam the Bartender” in the long-running series “Gunsmoke.”

Parked in front of the store will be the 1964 Pontiac Bonneville owned by Nudie Cohn, the original Rhinestone Cowboy. Festooned with six-shooter pistols, steer horns, and a full Indian headdress, the wagon is one of Nudie’s most extravagant creations. Granddaughter Jamie Lee Nudie will be on hand to autograph her book, “Nudie the Rodeo Tailor,” and invite folks to ogle the outlandish car.

You may think you’re seeing the ghost of Chuck “The Rifleman” Connors as you enjoy the festivities. Jeff Connors, with the same chiseled good looks as his father, will be strolling about, twirling the modified 1892 Winchester SRC from the famous television series.

If you prefer horses to cars, Star and Angel, two miniature horses from Heads Up Therapy on Horseback, will be there to pet and enjoy. Heads Up Therapy provides therapeutic riding to disabled children and adults. Located in Canyon Country, the program uses games, exercises, and music to help riders develop better balance, strength, eye-hand coordination, social skills, and self-esteem.

To get hands clapping and toes tapping, The Tumbling Tumbleweeds will perform at 6:30.

As winners of the WMA 2008 Crescendo Award for Most Promising Talent, they will bring their own brand of entertainment to Old Town Newhall with a combination of singing, humor, storytelling, and a bit of fancy Western footwork.

The Tumbling Tumbleweeds are not only a tribute to Silver Screen cowboys, but they were also named one of the Top 10 Live Acoustic Acts in Southern California by FolkWorks Magazine.

OutWest is a retail venue offering classic, unusual and distinctive apparel, accessories, home décor, children’s items, and general merchandise that are a reflection of the Western lifestyle.

Purveyors Jim and Bobbi Jean Bell are passionate about the American West, the truth and the myth, and they scout for high quality, fun, and affordable items created by artisans and craftspeople inspired by the West.
