Pampering To Raise Funds For Domestic Violence Center

Event promises to educate and pamper women as well as help local abuse center.


A fundraising “beauty shop makeover” to raise money for the SCV Domestic Violence Center will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 at Valencia United Methodist Church on McBean Parkway. A complete pampering will be yours for $65; you’ll contributing to a good cause and leave feeling like an educated star.

This is the 25th anniversary year the SCV Violence Center addresses the community on the effects of violence and abuse in the family.


“This is the center’s largest annual fundraiser, with net proceeds going to the Santa Clarita Domestic Violence to aid to families in need”, according to Connie Sparks, board member and event coordinator. “The Domestic Violence Center of the SCV’s 24-hour hotline has seen a 36 percent increase over the last year. Spanish language group counseling has increased by 115 percent, while individual counseling hours for women, children and batterers have increased 28 percent”.


Every year in this country, more than five million women are abused and more than 1,200 women are killed by an intimate partner.  Homicide is the leading cause of death for women in the workplace and over 500,000 women are stalked every year by an intimate partner.


Unfortunately, not only are these numbers growing, but experts are seeing a trend towards more teen abuse, that is, teenagers who are being abused by males in their life, usually a boyfriend or parent.  In Santa Clarita, the center is responding to this alarming trend with a new program that debuts this fall at a local high school. 


Supportive vendors to date include AFLAC Insurance Company, Beijo Bags, Arbonne, Pampered Chef Consultant, Rubberpi, Inc., Little Black Dress, Mighty Thunder Web Design & Marketing, Nelson Treasures and The Democratic Club of the Santa Clarita Valley. Other service providers are: Nails by Lori Schnieder, Capelli Salon, Arbonne, Shelly Windsor Image Consultant, Sarah Kaupp Photography, Weekenders, Mr. Trainer Massage Therapy,


The Honorary Chair of the event is Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Keller. Guest speakers are nurse Linda K. Jones, psychiatric social worker Carole Lutness and legal office manager Jacques Conaway.  Receiving special recognition will be Jean Albrent, Executive Director and Almira Ramerez, Program Director.


“The center began about 25 years ago as a refuge point for women in the Santa Clarita community who were seeking hope and assistance in turning their lives around”, says Jorja Harris, president. "We started off with $60,000 and now we have a budget of $400,000”.
